Emergency Preparedness

In the event of a genuine emergency the following procedures will be conducted.  It is my hope that by following the same measures in a genuine emergency as in a drill will orient children as to what they should do, will help keep the children calm and help them to follow through with these skills in a real emergency.

FIRE EVACUATION AND DRILL PLAN:

Regular fire drills will be performed on a different date and time each month. These drills will be recorded, showing the number of children, number of adults, date, time, amount of time taken to evacuate and the licensee’s signature. In the event of a genuine fire (as well as a fire drill) the following procedures will be followed.

à        Upon fire alarm or observation of a fire the children will be collected in a calm manner and evacuated from the home.

à        The children will be evacuated using the posted evacuation route.  Exit “A” will be used as a primary way out.

à        Activation of the wall-mounted fire alarm will be made if possible upon exit, if the alarm has not sounded yet.

à        We will all gather in the grassy area adjacent to the building.

à        Attendance will be taken.

à        I will notify a neighbour call 911 and provide the civic address and details of the fire after exiting if the fire alarm has not been triggered.

à        We will not re-enter the building unless directed to do so by the Fire Department.

à        If the fire damage is extensive or sufficiently serious parents will be called and children will be sent home immediately.  If the parents are not available, the child’s emergency contacts will be called.

à        After each fire drill there will be a discussion of fire safety with the children.  Please see the form “Teaching Fire Escape Plans”.

NATURAL DISASTERS AND DRILL PLAN (example is an Earthquake):

à        In the event of an earthquake children will “duck and cover”, face away from windows, and count to 60 or 10-6 times.

à        After the earthquake has past the children will be evacuated, attendance taken and children lead to safety.  ***I have an earthquake kit and first aid kit that will be used and transported as needed.***

à        If relocation is required a notice of destination will be posted at the daycare site and information given to our out of province emergency persons.

à        The daycares out of province emergency contact person or persons will be contacted as soon as possible (this is the primary contact for parents).  Parents are responsible to this contact person for information on there child.

à        Tender Spirits Childcare currently doesn’t have an “out of province” contact.  In lieu of an “out of province” contact the facility will be using two alternate contacts outside of the lower mainland.  These contact people are: (Monica’s Aunt)  OR (Monica’s Cousin)

à        Parents are also responsible to provide out of province emergency contact information to the childcare provider.  This information will be used secondary to the daycares out of province emergency contact person.

à        Parents are asked to keep the secondary out of province emergency contact information card in the child’s back pack as well as updated in my records.

PARENTS ROLE IN PREPAREDNESS:

à        Prepare and keep a comfort kit item in your child’s back pack and supply an item to be kept in the childcare kit as well.  (This includes items such as a picture of the family, a letter saying some encouraging words, a cuddly toy, and a favorite book.)

à        Keep emergency contact information updated – update it every few months.

à        Teach and talk about fire and earthquake safety at home.

à        Keep the out of province contact person’s number in your purse or wallet.  Call that person for information about the children in the even of a disaster.

à        In the event of a change in location due to safety the out of province contact will be notified and a notice will be posted at the previous location.
